THUNDER BAY, ON  -----   September 19, 2011 ---  Today, Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak was joined by Karm Singh, Ontario PC candidate for Etobicoke North, Mary Anne DeMonte-Whelan, candidate for Etobicoke Centre, and Simon Nyilassy, candidate for Etobicoke-Lakeshore at the Return Trax Warehouse to announce he will unplug Dalton McGuinty’s mandatory smart meter tax machines that are causing family energy bills to skyrocket. A Tim Hudak government will let Ontario families decide for themselves what’s right for their households and their family budget, by ending the mandatory smart meter time-of-use pricing program.

Dalton McGuinty’s so-called smart meters unfairly force families to pay more on their home energy bills simply based on what time of day they do chores, when the kids use the computer for homework, or when families enjoy activities at home together. What’s worse, Dalton McGuinty has quietly approved charging Ontario families a new smart meter tax that will drive up bills even more.

On October 6th, Ontario families face a clear choice. They can choose four more years of Dalton McGuinty’s expensive energy experiments, energy tax hikes, and meddling in our daily lives – or they can choose a Tim Hudak government that will never tax families for daring to live a normal life. We will unplug mandatory smart meters, cancel Dalton McGuinty’s secret new smart meter tax grab, and deliver the home energy bill relief families deserve.

Today’s ridiculous and weak claim from the Dalton McGuinty Liberals that their mandatory smart meter tax machines save people money shows just how out of touch they are with Ontario families.  According to the Liberals’ own Ontario Energy Board, families with an activated smart meter tax machine have seen their hydro rates increase by 150% under Dalton McGuinty – compared to 84% for families without an activated smart meter tax machine.

Dalton McGuinty’s mandatory smart meter tax machines are hitting seniors particularly hard as they are paying increased hydro rates when they do their laundry and cook their lunch during the daytime when hydro rates are at their absolute highest.

In changebook, Tim Hudak and the Ontario PC Party will give families relief on their hydro bills by offering them a choice between two options.

Option 1

Keep Dalton McGuinty’s time of use pricing.
Option 2

Remain on the current flat rate that they are on.

Families can decide for themselves which option best works for their lifestyle.  If seniors on a fixed income want to choose a flat rate that doesn’t punish them for being home during the day, they can choose to remain on the flat rate.

The only person hiking hydro bills in Ontario is Dalton McGuinty.  Under Dalton McGuinty Ontario families are paying $516 more per year on their hydro bills. (Ontario Ministry of Energy)

On October 6th Ontario families face a clear choice between Dalton McGuinty who will continue to hike hydro bills, or Tim Hudak and the Ontario PC Party who will give families immediate relief on their hydro bills.
