Residents of Northwestern Ontario will have better access to cardiac services with the approval of a new angioplasty suite at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Ontario is investing up to $8 million for a new angioplasty suite at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre so that residents of Northwestern Ontario will no longer have to travel outside of the region for angioplasty services.

Northwestern Ontario currently has one of the highest rates of cardiac disease in the province. In the past year about 450 patients from the region had to be transferred to other sites in Ontario to receive an angioplasty procedure.

The new angioplasty suite will feature:

  • Two cardiac catheterization labs used for angioplasties and other cardiac procedures
  • Sixteen patient recovery stretchers
