EcoSuperior’s Painted Rain Barrel auction, presented this year by Landale Gardens! The fourth annual fundraiser is set to begin Friday at the CLE Home & Garden Show and runs all weekend long. Bidders can make a bid on any of the 30 rain barrels designed and painted by local artists.
The unique pieces of outdoor art have been a big draw since EcoSuperior began the event in 2010. Bidders have paid as much as $375 for a creatively decorated barrel.
Participating artists stand to benefit also, with cash prizes up for grabs and over 20,000 people viewing the entries. Fifty percent of the bid for the top selling barrel goes to the artist, while $100 cash prizes are offered to the best individual design, best collaborative design and Children’s Choice. Kids can participate in a fun scavenger hunt to discover design elements throughout the display of barrels, and place their vote for the Children’s Choice winner. Prize sponsors for 2014 include ALS Labs, Artistic Landscaping, Northern Windows and Gillons.
Social media will help select the prize winners also, with entries posted on Facebook and open to voting by the public. “It’s a fun event that has really taken off in our community,” say EcoSuperior Executive Director Ellen Mortfield. “But the great part is that it also brings attention to the more practical uses of rain barrels, and that is to help address residential storm water issues.”
The Painted Rain Barrel Auction runs Friday through Sunday inside the Lowery’s Sports Dome. Successful bidders will be notified Sunday evening. Funds raised help support the environmental programs offered by EcoSuperior.
Title Of Work: Ba-Ba's Babushka Doll Garden
About The Artist:
Diane Jaroway, better known as local radio personality 'Dee' from "The Dave & Dee Morning Show" on Rock 94 enjoys relaxing with a myriad of projects when not waking up the city of Thunder Bay at 6am. Dee's favorite creative pastimes include writing, photography, videography, cooking, singing, drawing and painting.
Inspiration of Work:
Dee grew up in a Polish/Ukrainian household and her artwork is very much inspired by her heritage. Her mother would take her mushroom picking and tell her many wonderful folklores. Her grandmother who lived in Winnipeg would put a tiny Dee into her freshly filled rain barrel where she loved to splash around. Thinking back, Dee figures she was probably enjoying a bath with a bunch of Manitoba Mosquitoes! These dolls are a reminder of the beautiful carved Russian dolls.
