OPP are now saying Nipigon River Bridge is closed indefinitely in both directions for repairs
Nipigon Mayor Richard Harvey has announced that arrangements have been made for emergency vehicles and foot traffic can cross. Vehicles are being turned away to keep traffic from poling up here causing congestion

Vehicles are being encouraged to travel west to go through the United States at the border crossing in Sault Ste. Marie. and those heading east can cross into the states at Pigeon River.
Mayor of Nipigon, Richard Harvery said If anyone is stranded because of the bridge we will be keeping the community center open for people to stay warm.
It appears that a section of the bridge has dropped resulting in the OPP closing the bridge. Which stops all east west traffic across Canada for an unknown length of time.
OPP Nipigon said an expansion joint has failed, causing the bridge to drop about two feet. The OPP became aware of the issue around 3:05 p.m. and engineers have already been mobilized to fly from Southern Ontario to assess the damage.
The westbound half of the swing bridge opened on Nov. 29, 2015 after three years of construction.
The old bridge is no longer avail to be used as it is being demolished in preparation the the construction second half of the bridge.
The northside or west bound side of the bridge was built first
The old bridge is being removed and it will be replace with the new east bound bridge.
Ontario heralded the opening of the Nipigon River Bridge – the province's first cable-stayed bridge – in late November, when the westbound portion of the structure opened to two-way traffic. Work on the eastbound lanes continues, and is slated for completion in 2017.
