Thunder Bay Community Choir Benefit Concert to Help Locals with Dementia

THUNDER BAY, ON - NOVEMBER 25, 2009 – The Thunder Bay Community Choir will host a benefit concert for the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, on Sunday, November 29, 2009. Over 3,200 people in the Thunder Bay and surrounding area are served annually through the local Alzheimer Society. The media is cordially invited to attend.

The choir is made up of approximately 58 singers from the musical community of Thunder Bay. Many of these singers are involved in more than one choir but feel that this special choir and its considerable contributions to local charities is an important and unique opportunity.

“We have chosen the Alzheimer Society to be the receiving charity for this concert as many of our choristers do have personal connections,” stated Mary McGhee, Director of the Thunder Bay Community Choir.  “The choir was most pleased to know that their efforts will help the work of this very important local charity,” McGee said.

52 percent of Canadians know someone with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.   The role of the main caregiver is often taken by the spouse or a close relative. Alzheimer's disease is known for placing a great burden on caregivers; the pressures can be wide-ranging, involving social, psychological, physical, and economic elements of the caregiver's life.  In developed countries, Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most costly diseases to society.

Rehearsal time is minimal so as to allow our choristers to maintain their many choral activities. The Advent concert presents the musical prelude to Christmas. The choir is often joined in concerts by members of the T Bay Symphony orchestra.
