Andy Wolff runs in Current River Ward

Minimize

THUNDER BAY, ON   -----  July 18, 2014  -----  Andy Wolff is running for Current River Ward Councillor.  Current River Ward is located on the north end of the Andy Wolff city beginning from Red River Road between Cumberland Street and Algoma Street extending to Byers Road off just down off Copenhagen Road.  I have been a life-long resident and I am quite familiar with the entire area.   So far I have talked to over 400 residents and share their concerns such as roads, property taxes, bike lanes, the proposed event centre and personal issues with their property.

Two major issues I see in Current River Ward are the future of both the LPH property and Boulevard Lake Park.  With regards to the LPH property, a number of residents expressed concerns with regards to the future of this property.  Currently, the City has this property zoned as residential land.  This means once the land is sold, it will be immediately developed for housing at the discretion of the private developer.  I feel at least a significant part of this land should remain as green space with input from citizens on what should be developed there.  As councillor, I will put a motion forward to have this property rezoned as parkland.

The other major issue is why the delay in dredging of Boulevard Lake and reconstruction of the Current River Dam?  I cannot see why millions of dollars have been spent revitalizing our waterfront and studies on the proposed event centre, when a fraction of that money could’ve been invested in the Boulevard Lake area.  I would like to look into the multi-use potential of Boulevard Lake.  In summer, we could offer swimming, boating and outdoor events like Summer in the Parks.  In winter, we could have the City’s largest skating rink.  Also, I would like to see a wider walkway on the Current River Dam that could be utilized as a lookout to the Sleeping Giant.

I will address all issues in Current River Ward by having regular ward meetings where citizens can voice their concerns and suggestions.  I will be committed to properly informing residents on all city and ward matters by publishing a quarterly report delivered to all residents as well as an interactive website.

What I see as the major issues for the city as a whole is that we need more inclusive leadership and better money management.  With inclusive leadership we need to properly inform citizens, involve citizens in decision-making and listen to citizens to effectively move Thunder Bay forward.  The results of this will go a long way towards ending the divisiveness our city faces today.  The by-product of better money management will lead to less taxes and utility rates, properly addressing our present facilities and infrastructure, as well as create a better environment for economic development.

It will not be easy to truly move this city forward.  There will be much opposition from those who prefer the status quo to revising our city planning which will address our rising costs, services offered, infrastructure and facilities.  It will take courage, conviction and competence to achieve our objectives and aspirations as a city.  I’m asking Current River Ward residents to elect me to be their strong voice for the City of Thunder Bay.
