THUNDER BAY, ON  ---   April 10, 2016 ----–  The Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra (TBSO) is proud to announce the 2016/17 season led by Music Director Arthur Post. Subscriptions are now available at the Community Auditorium Box Office, offering substantial savings over single ticket prices.

Overview
The entire TBSO season comprises classical, pops, and children’s concerts, amazing specials, fundraiser initiatives and concerts, education and outreach concerts, and two tours, East and West, throughout Northwestern Ontario. The regularly scheduled concerts are divided into five separate series – Masterworks, Pops, Classical Plus, Cabaret, and Family – as well as Special and Fundraiser Concerts.

Subscriptions are available for our individual series – Masterworks, Pops, Classical Plus, and Cabaret Series – as well as the complete Season, which comprises tickets to all series concerts including Family, and our flexible Select 6 package, which provides 6 tickets that can be exchanged for any Series concert.

Internationally celebrated trumpeter and the first classical brass soloist to ever be awarded the Order of Canada, Jens Lindemann joins guest conductor Rei Hotoda and the TBSO in a performance of Joseph Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto and Canadian composer Allan Gilliland’s Dreaming of the Masters III, which was especially commissioned for Lindemann.

Join guest conductor Mélanie Léonard as she returns to lead the TBSO in a night in which you’ll experience works from three generations of the Mozart family. Renowned Canadian violinist Jessica Linnebach takes the stage in a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s striking and expressive Violin Concerto No. 3.

4. A Night at the Opera
Thursday, February 23, 2017 / 8PM / TBCA
Lucas Waldin, conductor / Miriam Khalil, soprano / Ernesto Ramirez, tenor

Guest conductor Lucas Waldin returns to present A Night at the Opera, joined by guest soprano Miriam Khalil and tenor Ernesto Ramirez in his TBSO debut. The evening unites the powerful combined voices of the TBS Chorus and Lakehead University Vocal Ensemble, and the ethereal sounds of the TBSO. This amazing concert will feature some of the most beautiful arias, duets and choruses from Puccini, Verdi and more, and will include music from La bohème, La traviata, Il trovatore and others.



5. Sara Davis Buechner performs Chopin

Guest conductor Paul Haas takes the podium for an awe-inspiring concert featuring works by Charles Ives, Beethoven, and Haas himself. Pianist Sara Davis Buechner, an artist whom The New York Times says “has it all…intelligence, integrity and all-encompassing technical prowess,” will join Haas and the TBSO for a moving performance of Frédéric Chopin’s brilliant and poetic Piano Concerto No. 2.

6. Jennifer Koh performs Brahms

Hindemith: Mathis der Maler (Symphony)

Don’t miss Music Director Arthur Post’s final Masterworks concert, featuring the world premiere of Canadian composer Jordan Nobles’ Ouroboros and Paul Hindemith’s dramatic Mathis der Maler. Violinist Jennifer Koh, an artist who The New York Times hails as a “fearless soloist,” joins the TBSO to perform Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto.

2. Shaken, Not Stirred: The Music of James Bond

Jeans ‘n Classics returns to the TBSO stage – this time, for a musical journey through the James Bond films. Aston Martins, Bollinger champagne, and Vodka Martinis are the backdrop for this memorable concert, which features some of the most iconic songs from the Bond universe, including the classic James Bond Theme, Shirley Bassey’s Goldfinger, Paul McCartney and Wings’ Live and Let Die, and Adele’s Oscar-winning Skyfall.

3. Holiday Pops

A TBSO classic and Thunder Bay seasonal-must, the Holiday Pops is one of the most popular events of the year. Canadian conductor Les Dala returns to present a witty, charming, perennial holiday concert featuring many holiday music favourites, along with special guests Studio One Dance, The Stringlings, and other Thunder Bay talent.

4. TBSO By Request

A concert crafted by you! Guest Conductor Brian Jackson returns to lead the TBSO in a special concert experience where you, the audience, choose the music. Starting in October 2016, you’ll have the chance to vote, either in-person or on-line, to hear your favourite pieces from categories including favourite Musical, Film Score, Overture, and Symphonic Movement. Don’t miss this unique opportunity!

5. Comic Diva Natalie Choquette

World-renowned comic diva Natalie Choquette returns to the TBSO stage for a rousing concert led by Guest Conductor Rei Hotoda. Be ready for an evening of music, laughter, and excitement as Natalie Choquette entertains you with her unique blend of humour and vocal virtuosity.

6. Rita Chiarelli Returns

Join us for a special evening as we celebrate Music Director Arthur Post’s final Pops performance. Dubbed “the goddess of Canadian blues” by CBC Radio One, Juno award-winning Rita Chiarelli reunites with TBSO for a spectacular night of blues meets classical. You’ll get to experience the passionate, poignant music of a Canadian Blues icon. Rita’s soaring voice paired with the TBSO makes for a show you don’t want to miss.

Guest Conductor Giuseppe Pietraroria returns to lead the TBSO for this concert, featuring Principal Violist Mathilde Bernard who makes her TBSO soloist debut performing Bohuslav Martinů’s expressive Rhapsody-Concerto.

The Thunder Bay Symphony Chorus takes center stage showcasing their vocal talents in a selection of divine choruses from Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice. To close Music Director Arthur Post’s final Classical+ concert, the TBSO performs Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s lively and colourful Symphony No. 39.

CABARET SERIES
Cabaret blends the sounds of the TBSO with guest artists from Thunder Bay and Canada’s incredibly vibrant and diverse musical community.

3. Stars of the Orchestra

Travel back in time to the land of dinosaurs with the TBSO in this presentation of Canadian composer Dean Burry’s “Carnival of the Dinosaurs,” a captivating and engaging concert which brings nine different dinosaur species to life through a variety of extraordinary orchestral techniques.

Ehnes and his frequent musical collaborator, powerhouse pianist Andrew Armstrong, dazzle in a program that consists of works by George Frederick Handel, Ludwig van Beethoven, and a new work written for Ehnes by award-winning composer and Vancouver Symphony Music Director Bramwell Tovey.
