Painted Rain Barrel Art Project

Minimize
THUNDER BAY, ON   ----   February 23, 2014  ---  One of the year’s most unique art events is returning this spring and EcoSuperior, EcoSuperior Rain BarrelsThunder Bay,  is looking for more artists to participate. The Painted Rain Barrel Art Project is an opportunity to showcase local talent on a unique canvas, and several cash prizes will be awarded.

Artists, both amateur and professional, as well as community groups, businesses and schools are invited to submit an application for their rain barrel design before the end of February. Up to 30 artists will be selected to creatively paint a rain barrel supplied by EcoSuperior. The finished rain barrels will be sold in a silent auction sponsored by Landale Gardens during the Home & Garden Show April 4 - 6.

“The barrels we use for this event are re-purposed olive and pickle shipping barrels, fitted with a spigot, overflow hose and screened lid insert,” says EcoSuperior Executive Director Ellen Mortfield. “So they are already re-used, and now we are giving them yet another life as an art object.”

Each year the Painted Rain Barrel auction is a major attraction at the CLE/Lowerys Sports Dome Home & Garden Show. Last year, over 25,000 people viewed the exhibit, and the top selling barrel earned a bid of $350, with half of that awarded to the winning artist. Cash prizes are also awarded for Best Group work, Best Individual work, and Children’s Choice. All proceeds from the auction will go toward EcoSuperior’s demonstration house.

“We’ve already received some beautiful design submissions,” says Mortfield, “but we can accommodate a few more.” Maaco Collision Repair donates time to spray the barrels with primer, so they are provided ready-to-paint for each selected artist. Guidelines and artist tips are available on-line at www.ecosuperior.org or can be picked up at the office at 562 Red River Road.
