Trowbridge Falls Campground Closed for 2011 Camping Season

THUNDER BAY, ON - May 5, 2011 – Due to impacts associated with the Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) project to extend the Thunder Bay Expressway from Hodder Avenue to Spruce River Road (Highway 527) to four lanes, the Trowbridge Falls Campground will be closed for the 2011 camping season.

“The cumulative costs and impacts resulting from the Ministry’s important highway upgrade make the operation of the Trowbridge Campground impractical for this summer,” said Paul Fayrick, Manager – Parks Division. “We regret any inconvenience this may cause to regular users of Trowbridge Falls Park.”

City Council will receive an information report on Monday, May 9, that will outline the key factors that contributed to the closure:

• Restricted access due to MTO closing the intersection of Copenhagen Road (Hodder Avenue) and Highway 11/17 to all traffic for six to eight weeks in July and August limiting access.

• Lack of access to Kinsmen Park, Soldier’s Hole and other popular wading areas on the Current River Park from the campground entrance during July and August

• $30,000 cost to the City to provide temporary potable water to the park and campground.

• Loud noise and regular construction traffic adjacent to the campground early morning to late evening throughout the summer due to the construction lay down and service yard is located directly across from the campground entrance on Copenhagen Road.

Campers are encouraged to use the Chippewa Park Campground for the 2011 season. Trowbridge Falls Campground is expected to operate as usual for the 2012 camping season.
