THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO - March 17, 2012 - The Manitouwadge Community Services and Economic Development offices have teamed up to initiate a very exciting youth sporting event known as the Northwestern Ontario Youth Games. This event is scheduled to take place in Manitouwadge from January 31- February 3, 2013. The games will provide Northwestern Ontario Youth, who live in rural communities, the opportunity to strengthen sport development through athletic competition, cultural exchange and social interaction.
The host community of Manitouwadge is hoping to attract 200 athletes, 25 coaches and hundreds of spectators from across the region to this inaugural event. The sports will include the following in both girls and boys categories; hockey, curling, snowboarding, snowshoe biathlon, downhill skiing, badminton, ping pong, cross country skiing and a non-traditional home town event. The competition is open to boys and girls from twelve to fifteen years of age from rural communities with a population of fewer than 5000.
The committee believes that hosting such a prestigious event will show to all community residents and other neighboring communities that the Township of Manitouwadge is here; and that we have the recreation facilities, the volunteers and the sponsors to host this sporting attraction. These games will leave a long lasting legacy for Manitouwadge as a premiere youth recreation destination.
