Culture Days Thunder Bay


THUNDER BAY, ON   ------    September 4, 2010  ----   Calling all artists, cultural groups and Culture  Daysorganizations! Thunder Bay will be participating in its first ever Culture Days, a nation-wide movement promoting public engagement in arts and heritage activities on September 24-26. Join the movement by offering a FREE interactive activity to the public for a behind-the-scenes look at how culture is created in Thunder Bay. Activities can include anything from demonstrations, interactive concerts, guided tours, workshops, and much more – as long as they’re free for the public to enjoy!  Join the national movement to promote awareness, accessibility, and engagement in all types of cultural experiences offered in Thunder Bay! Take part in a wide range of free activities across the city on September 24-26 that give a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of arts, heritage, and culture.

Culture Days is a celebration of culture, encouraging cultural discovery for people of all ages. We invite you to try something new during the city-wide celebration... whether it's taking part in an interactive theatre production, attending a workshop, or participating in a guided tour of a historic building or studio, we challenge you to discover a new cultural experience!

Description: The Culture Plan Project Team will host the 2nd Community Open House. Everyone is invited to attend to give input on future priorities relating to arts, heritage, and culture while celebrating the kick-off to Culture Days in Thunder Bay!

Linoleum Print-Making

Location: Lake Superior Art Gallery
Description: Under the direction of Patricia Bigelow, visitors to the Lake Superior Art Gallery will be able to learn how to make a Linoleum Print and if there is time, make their own print.

Watercolour Demonstration by Coralie Leslie

Location: Lake Superior Art Gallery

Description: Local Watercolour Artist Coralie Leslie will be demonstrating watercolour painting and will have a number of her watercolour paintings available for visitors to ask her questions about.

Storytelling by Joan Baril
Saturday, Sept. 25
Time: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Location: Waverley Library Auditorium - 285 Red River Rd.
Description: Story teller Joan Baril will take you back in time through a number of stories based on local history. Listen as history comes alive with Joan's reading of Kaministiquia stories, Thunder Bay ghost stories, and a special story of Mrs. Pankhurst, famous leader of the British suffrage movement. Don't miss Joan's early 1900's costume for her transformation into Mrs. Pankhurst herself!

"The Garden of Eden" - Film event hosted by the Advanced Institute for Globalization and Culture (aig+c)

Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Lakehead University - UC1017
Description: The aig+c presents Andrei Streliaev, the Lakehead University Choir, and the silent film "The Garden of Eden."  Streliaev will provide professional piano accompaniment and the Lakehead University Choir will assist in bringing this silent film of 1928 to life at Lakehead University on the evening of Saturday, September 25.

Family Fun Art Day - Hosted by the Thunder Bay Art Gallery

Description: Enjoy an afternoon with a variety of projects available to try. All ages and everyone welcome. More details to follow.

Workshop-Presentation by Harpsichordist Eric Lussier - Hosted by Consortium Aurora Borealis
Sunday, Sept. 26
Time: 2:00 - 4:00 pm
Location: McNulty Recital Hall, Lakehead University
Description: Eric Lussier will present a special keyboard music workshop as an exciting educational event, offered to the public absolutely free of charge. The workshop follows one day after Lussier’s performance of Music of the Sons of Bach, which is the opening concert in the Consortium's 32nd season.
