Chippewa Park Carousel in Need of Refurbishing

Chippewa Park Carousel

Chippewa Park Carousel  #LSN_Outdoors

THUNDER BAY, Ontario --- November 21, 2016   (LSN) Built between 1918 and 20 and purchased for Chippewa Park in 1934 the C.W Parker Carousel is only one of 3 remaining out of 600 created and it is in desperate need of historical refurbishment.

The Carousel requires significant repair and upgrading. The original colour schemes will be re-established along with carved replacement of missing or damaged components of the horses, interior and exterior display panels & the Wurlitzer organ will be refurbished. The electrical system will be modernized and the exterior lights re-established.. Without this refurbishing the Carousel will continue to deteriorate to the point where it will no longer function

The Carousel has been in operation at the park since 1935 entertaining hundreds of thousands of children and adults alike.  The investment in refurbishing will ensure that the historical Carousel will be available for many decades to come and will accurately reflect the era when it was created.

The Friends of Chippewa Park, a not for profit organization that has raised and invested over $6.4 million into refurbishing the park will soon launch a campaign to raise the required $1.5 million for both the refurbishing and to construct a building to house the carousel year-round.

The advent of new infrastructure funds has triggered an accelerated approach to raising the necessary funds. An application has already been submitted to the Canada 150 fund with additional applications to be sent to Heritage Canada and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.  A request will be made to the City of Thunder Bay, the owner of the Carousel for funds as well.  The Friends of Chippewa Park are committed to raising up to $185,000 through a campaign to be launched in the new year.

If all goes well, funding will be in place by September of 2017 so that the Carousel can be refurbished over the winter of 2017-18 and be available for its normal operation starting in June of 2018.
