THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ---   October 20, 2014  ---  The recent announcement of a radon study by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has homeowners anxious to have their Julia Prinselaarhomes tested for radon. The 500 free test kits offered by the health unit were snapped up in just a few days. In response to the demand, EcoSuperior has brought in a supply of the test kits that are for sale at their Red River Road office.

“Until now, many people were unaware of the risks of radon in this area,” says EcoSuperior Executive Director, Ellen Mortfield. “Other retailers offer the kits, but here in our office we can also offer additional literature from Health Canada and trained staff who can answer people’s questions.”

Radon is an invisible, odourless gas that is naturally present in some soils.  It can seep into homes through cracks and openings in the foundation, including open sump pits.

Currently the only certified radon remediation contractor serving the area is based in Sault Ste. Marie. EcoSuperior is also hoping to address that need by working with Health Canada to organize a workshop for professionals later this fall.

“People are going to need more options for addressing the issue if testing reveals a high radon level,” adds Mortfield. “There are a variety of measures that can be used to remediate a building, but it is important to use a certified professional contractor to do this type of work.”

Radon test kits are now on sale for $35 at EcoSuperior, 562 Red River Road at Hill Street. The office is open 8:30 – 4:30 Monday to Friday. Kits can also be purchased on-line at  . Revenues from kit sales support EcoSuperior’s community environmental programs.

Customer Service Coordinator Julia Prinselaar restocks the supply of radon test kits at EcoSuperior. The kits include everything a homeowner needs to check the level of radon in their home, using a detector unit that should be left in place for 3 months.
