Painted Rain Barrel Auction

EcoSuperior’s Rain Barrel Auction

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ----- April 9, 2015   ----  You could choose noisy wind chimes, those creepy garden gnomes, or an ornate fountain, but if you really want a unique piece of outdoor art, a painted rain barrel is what every backyard needs. Not only is it functional, but the painted rain barrels at EcoSuperior’s annual auction event are one-of-a-kind creations by local artists. Plus, each one helps support environmental programs in our community.

The 5th Annual Painted Rain Barrel Auction, presented by Landale Gardens and DST Consulting Engineers, takes place once again this year at the Home and Garden Show from April 10 to 12, 2015. Thirty hand-painted rain barrels make an impressive display, and the event draws thousands of visitors each year.

“This year’s barrels feature some really unique designs,” says project coordinator Julia Prinselaar. “We have something for everyone, from a classic Van Gogh reproduction to farm and nature scenes and pop culture like Dr. Who.”

For some of the barrels, the bidding started early in an on-line auction accessible from EcoSuperior’s website. Top bids received on line will be transferred to the Home and Garden show on April 10 for three more days of live bidding. At the close of the show, winning bidders will be notified by telephone. The event also includes a treasure hunt for kids, who can seek out design elements for each barrel for a chance to win a prize package, and also vote on the Children’s Choice artist winner.

Each year, the event raises over $4000 for EcoSuperior’s community programs such as the nature-based summer day camp for kids, Central Gardens Natural Environment Park, litter prevention activities and school programs. Many businesses have supported the promotion of this year’s event as well as providing cash prizes for artists, including Northern Windows, Artistic Landscaping, The Chronicle Journal, Northern Credit Union and Dougall Media. Additional support for the event was provided by Auto Home Paints and Pinewood Ford.
