THUNDER BAY, ON --- May 27, 2011 --- Definitely Superior Art Gallery and its Board of Directors are honoured to announce that, for the second year running, we have been selected as a Finalist for the prestigious 2011 Premier’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts. The awards recognize the outstanding achievements of artists and arts organizations and their contributions to arts and culture in Ontario over a significant period of time.
We are in extremely good company alongside Hot Docs (Toronto), Blyth Festival (Blyth), Dusk Dances (Toronto), The Mariposa Folk Festival (Orillia) and Vtape (Toronto).
The award is an acknowledgement of the gallery's track record of excellence in contemporary arts programming. In its 23 year history, Definitely Superior has presented over 700 exhibitions, events and activities, both on- and off-site, supporting as many as 11,000 multi-disciplinary artists.
Of this year's approximately 200 nominees, only six arts organizations including Definitely Superior, were awarded the honour of being finalists. This is the second year that the gallery has been selected as a finalist; the first time was last year, in 2010. Definitely Superior Art Gallery is the only arts organization has been ever acknowledged as a finalist for this award not only from Thunder Bay but all of Northwestern Ontario.
The public and all of our supporters are cordially invited to join us for a Pre-Awards and Supporters Appreciation Party on Friday, June 3rd (7-10pm) at Definitely Superior Art Gallery (250 Park Ave/lower level/former Eaton's Building).
Help us celebrate the recognition of Definitely Superior Art Gallery’s 23 year history of artistic excellence in Thunder Bay & Northwestern ON, respectively producing/presenting over 700 exhibitions, events, activities and supporting as many as 11,000 multi-disciplinary artists.
On this occasion, we would also like to personally express our thanks to the public and all our supporters (artists/funders/sponsors/donors/programming partners/volunteers) who have made this honour and the existence of Definitely Superior Art Gallery possible in our community.
The party will feature: delectable catered refreshments by Good News Café, Lot 66 & Sweet Pea Home Catering, lots of art, live music, promotional films and more...
Everyone is welcome! No need to RSVP, just come out for a great time! We hope to see you there!

"Being a Premier’s Awards Finalist for the second year running in a tangible sense means that a second jury with totally new members has recognized Definitely Superior Art Gallery's excellence. Being a finalist once again raises the profile of the gallery even further, and reinforces the recognition that the gallery is receiving for the high calibre of multi-disciplinary regional, national and international artists that have been participating in our programming, as well as the tremendous up swell in support that we have been receiving from the community. This also once again raises the profile of the City of Thunder Bay as a place for innovative arts and culture in Ontario. Our City will be viewed by others in Canada as a catalyst for new and exciting contemporary visual and multi-disciplinary arts.
We gratefully acknowledge all of the talented artists who have shaped the gallery since 1988, along with our extensive network of supporters in the community. Thanks especially to our nominator, Linda Beresnevicius (former Public Art Coordinator, City of Thunder Bay) for her support. We also gratefully acknowledge and thank our government operating funders: City of Thunder Bay-Cultural Services, Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts, for supporting the gallery's development of contemporary artists and art in our community, David Karasiewicz, Director of Definitely Superior Art Gallery
Michael Chan, Minister of Tourism and Culture, said, “A vibrant arts and culture sector is vital to building healthy communities and economic prosperity in Ontario. This is our government’s way of saying ‘thank you’ for everything artists do to enrich our lives. Congratulations to all the finalists.”
