THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  -----    January 7, 2015“By developing its scenic waterfront, Nipigon is building on its reputation for great fishing Michael Gravelle Nipigonand magnificent natural landscapes and bringing tourists to the Superior North region. Nipigon is about one hour east of Thunder Bay, Ontario.  I am very pleased that the NOHFC is investing in this initiative that will help strengthen the area’s tourism sector and create new jobs for northerners.”
— Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and Mines and Chair of the NOHFC

Ontario is investing in Nipigon’s waterfront development that will increase tourism and create local jobs by enhancing amenities and attractions that will draw visitors to the area.

With an investment of $1 million from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the Township of Nipigon is developing its Railway Street lookout tower and rest area to provide visitors a view of the community’s waterfront and the Nipigon River Bridge, which will be Ontario’s first cable-stay bridge on the provincial highway system. In addition, Nipigon will construct a lagoon boardwalk to provide public access to the water’s edge and an events park to host special events, concerts and festivals.

Investing in tourism infrastructure is part of the government's economic plan for Ontario. The four-part plan is building Ontario up by investing in people’s talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives and building a secure savings plan so everyone can afford to retire.
