THUNDER BAY, ON  ----  June 30, 2015 ---- At the request of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC), the Board of Health approved the secondment of Dr. David Williams, Medical Officer of Dr. David Williams MOHHealth (MOH), to act as Interim Chief Medical Officer of Health for Ontario from July 1, 2015 until September 30, 2015. During this period, Associate MOH Dr. Janet DeMille will be the Acting Medical Officer of Health for the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU).

Recognized for his public health expertise, this is the second call to the province for Dr. Williams: In 2005 he was seconded to the Ministry as the Associate Chief MOH and also acted as Chief MOH before returning to Thunder Bay District in 2011.

“It is a show of public confidence and a testament to his dedication to public health that Dr. Williams has again been called upon by the Ministry for a provincial leadership position,” says Norm Gale, Chair of the Board of Health.

“The Board is also pleased that through effective succession planning, the TBDHU’s Associate MOH Dr. Janet DeMille is fully prepared to step into the Acting MOH role; providing the Thunder Bay District with seamless MOH coverage during Dr. Williams’ absence.”

Dr. DeMille took on the Associate MOH position with the TBDHU in 2012 after earning her Royal College certification in Public Health and Preventive Medicine following her residency training at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. She is an experienced physician who had worked in the Thunder Bay District for 10 years prior to her public health specialization, including 5 years with TBDHU’s clinical services.

“I have worked side by side with Dr. DeMille through several public health scenarios over the past three years,” says Williams. “She has demonstrated strong management skills, an extensive knowledge of public health and acumen for working as a senior manager. I am confident of her leadership and thankful for her support during the secondment period.”
