Superior North Shore Regatta (SUNORA)

THUNDER BAY, ON  ---  May 27, 2013 ----  18th Annual SUNORA -----   Sailing season has started Beautiful Morning once again in Thunder Bay and for many sailors, this means getting registered for the Superior North Shore Regatta (SUNORA).  This annual event encompasses what many sail boat owners and enthusiasts enjoy about their sport…races, fun activities, camaraderie and of course the sound of the water rushing by and the sails full of wind.

This will be our 3rd year in the SUNORA, as crew members of our friend’s boat Pompano and we look forward to all the fun and work.  Yes the work is there, from taking in the anchor or untying the lines from the rafted boats, to trimming the sails. And of course there is the arduous task of getting another cold beverage from the cooler.

This year’s SUNORA includes a start at Tee Harbour (near the toes of the Sleeping Giant), on Saturday July27th, followed by stops at Moss Harbour, Nipigon, Red Rock, Otto Cove, Willard and Pringle.  Along the way, we will have a Potluck BBQ in Nipigon, a banquet in Red Rock and trophies awarded before we return on August 3rd.

Trophies are given out for legs raced, according to the boat ratings and there are other prizes to get the crews, families and friends involved in the fun week.  Try a dinghy race, enter your coffee in a tasting contest or just join in the festivities after all the boats have moored for the night.  Kids are always encouraged and are not just welcomed but appreciated.

Whether you have a large cruiser or a smaller agile sailboat, I encourage you and your family and friends to sign up and have fun at this year’s wonderful SUNORA.  For information, contact Jon Block at the Thunder Bay Yacht Club.
