THUNDER BAY, ON  ---------November 22, 2010 – City Council presented the 3rd Annual Clean, Green Landale Gardens& Beautiful Awards, the Thunder Bay Green Giant Award and officially recognized the winners of the Civic Beautification and the Best Block Awards at the Committee of the Whole Meeting Monday.

Clean, Green & Beautiful
The Clean, Green & Beautiful Awards celebrate businesses and organizations who are improving the physical environment and the quality of life in our city. These awards recognize building and renovation projects that enrich the life of the community through public art, beautification, heritage and environmental greening.

"A clean, green & beautiful Thunder Bay depends on the pride of residents of all ages, businesses, and property owners," says Mayor Lynn Peterson, who chairs the Clean Green and Beautiful Committee. "Our winners are examples to us all and ambassadors of pride in our community.”

Four local projects earned Clean, Green & Beautiful awards:
 Diamond Level – George Jeffrey Children’s Centre
 Gold Level – TBT Engineering Limited for the restoration of the Paterson Sailors Memorial Park
 Gold Level – The Current River Park Project-Fisherman’s Park created by the North Shore Steelhead Association, Hydro One, Ontario Stewardship, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and the City of Thunder Bay
 Silver Level – Thunder Bay & Region Emergency and Protective Services Training Centre

Thunder Bay Green Giant Award
The Thunder Bay Green Giant award recognizes Thunder Bay’s greenest citizens, those who are leading the way to a greener and more sustainable Thunder Bay. The 2nd Annual award was presented to Don Mitchell for efforts his work environmentally-friendly initiatives at his work place, the Ontario Government Building at 435 James St., including Community and Wellness Gardens and bicycling to work. Mr. Mitchell involves and encourages others to take part by actively removing barriers to sustainability and initiating programs that benefit the community.

Contributions to Civic Pride
The City of Thunder Bay, in conjunction with the Thunder Bay Horticultural Society, recognizes business, industry and homeowner efforts that beautify our city. The following winners of the Civic
Beautification Awards were thanked before council for their contributions to civic pride:

Mayor's Commercial Frontage Award:
1. Landale Gardens, 1230 Hawker Road
2. McDonalds Restaurant, 853 Red River Road
3. Robins Donuts, 500 W. Arthur St  

Mail Carrier's Front Yard Award:
1.  Archibald Bruce, 441 S. Archibald St
2.  Bev Chaboyer, 565 Pasteur Road  
3.  Mary B. Bayko, 622 Nobel Road

Total Rural Property Award (within City limits):
1.  Wyoma & Wm Fauconnier, 1759 Meryle St 
2.  Sam & Sharon Demeo, 125 Millford Rd
3.   Barb & Les Tabachak, 2055 Paquette Rd

Apartment, Condominium & Townhouse Gardens (includes Container & Balcony Gardens) Award:
1.  Susan Jaward, 38 Farrand St
2.   Barb Setala, 1120790 Arundel St 

Specialty Gardens with a distinct “Theme” Award:
1.  Bernice Dawd, 170 Masters St

Institutional/Public Grounds Award:
1.  Westminster United Church, 650 River St  

Vegetable Gardens:
1.  Guiditta Dalpio, 250 S. Algonquin Ave  
2.  Lisa Ly, 118 Windsor St  
3.  Dominic Bet, 305 Philips St

Residential Property as Seen from the Road Award:
1.  Sylvia & Terry Gunnel, 519 Richard St
2.  Marilyn Babish, 3271 Willard Ave 
3.  Gladys Babish, 3261 Willard Ave 

The 2010 Best City Block Award, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Westfort, in conjunction with the City, was presented to 145-182 Bentwood Drive. This award recognizes beautification efforts and neighbourhood pride of a city block or street. 
Civic Pride Honourees enjoyed a dinner reception with Council before the ceremony.
