WSIB SPECIALTY CLINICS NEEDED IN NORTH WESTERN ONTARIO

Minimize

THUNDER BAY, ON ---  September 23, 2012 ----  Dr. Jack Remus CD, MD, CM, FRCS(C) met with Elizabeth Witmer, Chair, WSIB, Honourable Michael Gravelle, MPP, Dr. Jack Remus CD, MD, CM, FRCS(C)Superior North, a representative from Bill Mauro, MPP, Thunder Bay/Atikokan  and Paul Field, Director, WSIB, Thunder Bay to discuss the need to have WSIB Speciality Clinics in Northwestern Ontario.

Dr. Remus stressed that we need to “immediately develop WSIB Specialty Clinics in Thunder Bay so that WSIB claimants have immediate access to specialists, diagnostics and treatment resulting in an early and timely return to modified or regular employment.  Seeing and being treated by surgical specialists in Thunder Bay rather than travelling to see specialists in Southern Ontario will reduce the costs to employers as well as reducing the discomfort and stress to the injured worker and his/her family”.  Also discussed was the fact that Thunder Bay and North Western Ontario with its new Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, its excellent surgical, medical, radiological, and mental health specialists and the new Northern Ontario School of Medicine (western campus at Lakehead University) is quite capable of developing and maintaining WSIB Specialty Clinics.

BACKGROUND:

Approximately 35 WSIB Specialty Clinics have been created and are situated throughout Ontario except in North Western Ontario.  Since no facility exists in North Western Ontario injured workers must be transferred to Southern Ontario mainly Toronto for medical assessments, specialized treatment, and care plans.
