 Open Streets 2014

THUNDER BAY, ON  ---- July 28, 2015  ----  EcoSuperior is excited to announce that Open Streets will be returning to Thunder Bay this September 27, 2015 to coincide with the City of Thunder Bay’s Culture Day. Court Street from John Street to Camelot Street will me closed to motor vechicles,

Last year Open Streets Thunder Bay shut down Algoma St to motorized vehicles and opened it up to pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers, and dog walkers. Along the route local organizations hosted a variety of activities that were free and accessible to all ages and abilities.

“We were so happy with the public response and support that we received last year that we really wanted to keep the program running, “says program coordinator Ashley Priem. “Thanks in part to a We Are Cities: Community Innovation Grant, EcoSuperior can continue the Open Streets initiative with one event in 2015.

The We Are Cities: Community Innovation Grant program is led by Evergreen CityWorks, a national organization that is taking steps to change how we plan and design our cities to transform the way we live, and reduce the environmental impact of urban areas on a large scale. The $3000 grant will be combined with business sponsorships and fundraising to cover the estimated $10,000 cost of hosting an Open Streets event.

This year’s proposed route is a 1.4 km stretch along Court Street from John Street to Camelot Street. “By modifying the route to include Court St, we have the opportunity to highlight another vibrant Thunder Bay neighbourhood that is great for walking and biking,” comments Priem. This new route contains a mix of residential homes, local businesses and restaurants which helped make the Algoma Open Streets so successful last year.

EcoSuperior is seeking volunteers and additional funding support for the event. Businesses interested in sponsoring Open Streets can contact Ashley Priem at 624-2142 to request a sponsor package.
