Duluth, Minn., USA -- Jan. 26, 2017 (LSN) At its first meeting of 2017, the newly seated St. Louis County (SLC) Board appointed two new commissioners to the Duluth Seaway Port Authority-Patrick Boyle and Pete Stauber. They will complete remaining terms of former commissioners Chris Dahlberg and Steve Raukar, respectively, both of whom chose not to run for reelection to the SLC Board last fall.
Boyle, a nurse practitioner for the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, was first elected to the SLC Board in a special election in January 2014 to fill out the term of the late Steve O'Neil. At the time, he was a member of the Duluth City Council. He was reelected last November for a four-year term. As a county commissioner, he has chaired the Public Safety Committee and currently chairs the Health and Human Services Committee. Boyle has been active in the community as a member of the Friends of the Lakewalk and the Duluth Preservation Alliance. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two daughters and live in Duluth. His appointment to the Port Authority Board runs through Dec. 31, 2017. read more ...

THUNDER BAY, ON --- January 3, 2017 (LSN) The net water supplies to Lake Superior were above average in December. The level of Lake Superior declined 8 cm (3 in), which is the average decline in December. The Lake Superior level at the beginning-of-January is 14 cm (6 in) above average, 8 cm (3 in) below the level recorded a year ago at this time, and 30 cm (12 in) above its chart datum level.
The International Lake Superior Board of Control, under authority granted to it by the International Joint Commission (IJC), has set the Lake Superior outflow to 2,400 cubic meters per second (m3/s) (84.8 thousand cubic feet per second (tcfs)) for the month of January, effective January 4th. The outflow is being set to the normal maximum winter flow prescribed by Plan 2012, and may at times vary due to weather events and changes in hydrologic and ice conditions. read more ...

Thanks to a robust U.S and Canadian grain crop, agricultural products including corn, soy beans, wheat and sugar beet pellets made up the majority of the exported cargos.” Many of the ships that traded in the Seaway System this month will most likely make one last call before the end of the 2016 navigation season. read more ...

Around 100 people from the marine and grain communities were at the ship’s christening, which was the first in Thunder Bay since 1983.

In June of 2012, I was privileged to be invited to join the s.s. Keewatin for her tow from Mackinaw City, Michigan, to her old home port of Port McNicoll, Ontario. The Keewatin is not only the last Canadian Pacific passenger ship, but also the world’s last surviving Edwardian passenger liner. My connection with her is that at the age of seventeen, in the summer before I entered university, I landed my first real job working as a waiter on her sister ship Assiniboia.

“Our Canadian and European trading partners kept U.S. Great Lakes ports extremely busy during the month of May,” said Betty Sutton, Administrator of the U.S. Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. “Over 100 vessels arrived in the Great Lakes Seaway System carrying cargoes of windmill components, aluminum, clay, steel and iron ore. Our ports are certainly ramping up for what looks to be another robust navigation season.”
While it may take awhile for shipments of iron ore and other bulk commodities to rebound, the 2015 shipping season is shaping up to be a strong year for project cargo at the Port of Duluth-Superior with upwards of 20 vessels booked so far

The June outflow is expected to exceed the combined capacities of the hydropower plants on the St. Marys River, which will be approximately 1974 m3/s in June, and the excess flow will be released through the control structure at the head of the St. Marys Rapids. read more ...
The gate setting of the control structure will be increased to an equivalent of approximately four gates fully open in June. The gate change will be conducted in two stages to help facilitate flow measurements at the rapids.

The outflow of Lake Superior will be adjusted over the next several months to accommodate expected maintenance at he hydropower plants, and to reduce the potential for adverse consequences of high and fluctuating flows in the St. Marys Rapids.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The grounded 603-foot Canadian bulk carrier Mississagi was successfully refloated on the St. Marys River following operations to offload approximately 2,000 tons of stone, Saturday.
The motor vessel, carrying more than 17,000 tons of stone, was transiting downbound the St. Marys River from Bruce Mines, Ontario early Wednesday when it ran aground in the Potagannissing Bay, approximately 4 miles northeast of De Tour Village.

Sault Ste Marie, Michigan —--- April 23, 2015 --- The Coast Guard is responding to a 603-foot bulk carrier which ran aground in the St. Marys River near De Tour Village, Michigan, early Wednesday.
The motor vessel Mississagi, a Canadian-flagged bulk carrier with a load of stone, was transiting downbound the St. Marys River from Bruce Mines, Ontario, when it ran aground in the Potagannissing Bay approximately 4 miles northeast of De Tour Village.
There are no reported injuries to the crew and no reported pollution. read more ...

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. – April 8, 2015 --- The U.S. Coast Guard and Canadian Coast Guard continue to break ice on eastern Lake Superior for vessels that are waiting to transit to and from the lower Great Lakes.
U.S. Coast Guard Cutters Mackinaw and Alder are teaming up with the Canadian Coast Guard Cutter Samuel Risley to create tracks that will enable vessels to continue transiting with cargo to and from various ports. A second Canadian Coast Guard Cutter, Pierre Radisson, is expected to arrive in the area this afternoon.

Washington, DC (April 2, 2015) – The U.S. and Canadian Seaway Corporations marked the opening of the Seaway’s 57th navigation season today, with the transit of the newly-built CWB Marquis through the St. Lambert Lock. The vessel is the first of two Equinox-class lakers ordered by Winnipeg-based grain marketer CWB that are being purpose-built for trade in the Great Lakes Seaway System. In 2014, over 12 million tons of grain moved through the Seaway, the highest volume recorded since the beginning of the 21st century.

On Sunday morning, the John G. Munson, with an assist from Heritage Marine tugs, is set to move from its winter berth at Fraser Shipyards in Superior to first fuel at the Port Terminal then shift over to the CN Duluth Dock to load 24,000 short tons of iron ore pellets. On Monday morning, the Munson is slated to depart beneath the Aerial Bridge, destined for Gary, Indiana.
Late Monday afternoon/early evening, the Mesabi Miner is expected to depart from the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal with some 57,000 tons of coal onboard for the power plant at Taconite Harbor. After making that delivery, the 1,000-footer will return to the Twin Ports for a couple of days of scheduled maintenance work and to load its next coal cargo.
