When the Time is right! #LSN_Arts

Mario Crudo Magnus Theatre

Mario Crudo receives a watercolour of Magnus Theatre from Treasurer Ernie Epp and President Kathleen Lynch on his retirement.

THUNDER BAY, ON  --  August 23, 2016  (LSN) The first time I attended Magnus Theatre, it was a cold, wet and wintery night. As I stepped out of my car, my foot quickly found a deep puddle and I ended up walking up the steps to the old east end theatre with a twisted ankle. The play must have been good that night because I have kept on coming to Magnus Theatre. Mario Crudo has been Artistic Director of this theatre for nearly 25 years. He is just as passionate about the theatre as he ever, only that passion has changed a little.

From its early days in the City’s East End, no one could have imagined the state of the art modern theatre now occupying the historic Central School in Waverley Park. At the time the vacant school had become a political white elephant for the city, so many were opposed to developing this property commercially. Everyone it seems was against the destruction of the old building.

David Murray executive director Northwest Health Alliance LSN_Health

Thunder Bay, ON ─ August 16, 2016 ─ Jocelyn Bourgoin, Chair of the Board of the Northwest Health Alliance (NWHA), is pleased to announce that David Murray will be joining the NWHA as its new executive director effective September 1, 2016. David brings considerable experience to his new role having spent the majority of his career in health care within the community and hospital sectors. The NWHA is pleased to have found a unique northern solution in its choice of a new executive director. David has been a force of transformation in health care across the region and the province and his leadership talents are best used where they are needed the most, in Northwestern Ontario. Bourgoin stated; “David’s unique abilities to bring different views together at the table and his varied experience in community and institutional care are what is needed for the NWHA’s future in the coming years. We are happy to have him lead our team”.

The NWHA is expanding its role as a shared services corporation with the intent to provide a range of shared services to all of the Health Service Providers (HSPs) in the Northwest Local Health Integration Network (North West LHIN). Murray mentioned that “The benefits of working together are significant. It allows providers to standardize their operations and introduce best practices which are key factors in improving quality and outcomes. Also working together creates better economies of scale. The opportunity to build on the successes we have already achieved will allow the NWHA to improve access to services and help to make our system more sustainable. I’m excited to be part of the expansion of the NWHA over the next few years.”

Opinion Why are so many Canadians using food banks? - Wednesday, July 27, 2016
Food Banks

Why are so many Canadians using food banks?  #LSN_Opinion

WINNIPEG, Man. / Troy Media/ – Canadian households are paying more for a nutritious basket of food and rising prices hit low-income households hardest – especially those receiving government assistance. Food Banks Canada estimates that just over 850,000 Canadians use a food bank on a monthly basis.

The ability to afford food is increasingly problematic. Average prices run as high as $900 a month for a family of four in major cities like Vancouver and Toronto. This increased cost, along with escalating housing prices and stagnant incomes, has certainly contributed to rising food bank use.

THUNDER BAY, ON  -----   July 14, 2016  (LSN)  My name is Evan Polini. I have been a constable with the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service since August 2012. As you probably know we recently voted in favor of a mandate to strike to help receive more funding so are police service can be run comparable to other services in the province. The following is a story from my experience as a police constable with NAPS. Hopefully it will help get across to everyone why we are threatening job action. Due to confidentiality reasons the name of the reserve cannot be included and names and certain details have been removed.
