New Plan Will Divert 125 Tonnes of Waste in Sault North

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario -  June 22, 2011 ---  The Sault North Waste Management Council (SNWMC) is Sault North Wasteproud to announce the completion of an exciting project that will change the environmental face of Sault North! In 2010, they were awarded a $28,700 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to complete a new, five-year, Strategic Plan. After much hard work, they have completed that project and have officially release their new Strategic Plan for 2011-2015.

The strategies that form part of the plan were developed through a process of consultation and collaboration with key stakeholders and members. Their input and guidance resulted in a shared understanding of the situation and the creation of strategies designed to move towards a vision, mission and goals.

Formed in 2006 as a result of concerns over the waste disposal site closing in the area, SNWMC efforts were successful in achieving the ongoing operation of the site to date. Since then, SNWMC has worked tirelessly to implement programs that work towards sustainable waste management for the Sault North area.

The many accomplishments include: establishing a monthly curbside recycling program that since 2007 has diverted over 90 tonnes of waste from the waste disposal site; setting up cardboard recycling depots within the communities; development of an integrated education program that focuses on backyard burning, recycling, and other key waste issues for the Sault North schools and general public; research into alternative waste diversion options and development of strategies for long term waste management in Sault North. SNWMC was the recipient of the Sault Ste. Marie District MNR Stewardship Award in 2008 and the Lake Superior Binational Forum Award in 2009.

SNWMC will work to fulfill their strategy for waste diversion in Sault North (an unincorporated area which covers 35 townships and approximately 2700 km2.) SNWMC needs residents of Sault North to help! Visit our website at www.snwmc.com to find out more about the issue, view our Strategic Plan or to make a charitable donation.

The Sault North Waste Management Council (SNWMC) is governed by a volunteer Council that was established in 2006. The goal of SNWMC is to ensure environmentally sustainable and socially responsible waste management options for the Sault North Community. Council receives guidance and support from many partner Ministries and Agencies, and sustains its activities, including recycling, through proposal development and funding applications.
